To the teacher:
It would be wrong to assume
that all educationally deficient pupils suffer an equal degree
of deficiency. The term "homogeneous" is not accurate
when used to describe the pupils in these classes. For example,
a 7th grade class of educationally deficient pupils might include
a 4th to 6th grade range of educational skills abilities. There
will also probably be some pupils who have 7th grade educational
abilities but possess a learning style that requires a greater
degree of structure and support than is likely to be found in
a standard class. This may well prove to be a temporary condition,
but it ought to be taken into account.
The "enrichment"
items offer an opportunity for pupils to move up a notch. The
structured text material for the educationally deficient 7th grade
class aims to advance the pupils to a higher level than they now
possess. The "enrichment" items offer opportunities
for pupils to stretch out beyond their present limited educational
range. Still, we must approach the preparation of the "enrichment"
passages carefully and provide a degree of structure for them.
The poet may say "Man's reach should exceed his grasp",
but the teacher must take care not to employ methods and materials
that extend beyond a reasonable grasp.
